Two of our incredible doctors, Dr. Amanda and Dr. Sahar, got to try out one of Portland’s newest bars in the Pearl District for this month’s exploration of drinks and bites in our neighborhood. “Pretty Ugly” cocktail bar was the farthest thing from ugly with its upscale atmosphere and delicious food and drinks.

A New Pearl District Find

As one of the latest additions to the Pearl District, Pretty Ugly immediately caught Dr. Amanda and Dr. Sahar’s attention. After spotting it on Instagram and hearing the buzz, it felt like the perfect place to kick off the weekend with some post-work cocktails.

Stepping Inside

Right away, the space made an impression. “We couldn’t believe the transformation,” Dr. Amanda said. Previously home to a sushi restaurant, the interior had been completely reimagined. The vibe is cozy yet elevated, with dim, moody lighting, sleek décor, and candlelit tables that make it feel both intimate and stylish.

Sips & Bites

The cocktails started the night with fun flavors. “The Silly Rabbit” offered a creamy orange flavor reminiscent of a nostalgic Orange Julius (made with astral reposado, carrot–orange, vanilla citrus, salted maple cream), while the “Capreasy” stood out with its unexpected blend of tomato, basil, and white wine balsamic vinegar. Both doctors noted it tasted light and summery.

Their second round, which included an espresso martini and a margarita, proved the bar could master the classics just as well as unique creations.

The star of the food lineup was the pastrami-cured wagyu beef cheek with potato pavé. Perfectly tender and packed with flavor, it quickly became their favorite of the night. “It’s a special but it needs a permanent spot on the menu,” they both agreed. The focaccia and chili lime slaw made for great accompaniments, with the slaw bringing a refreshing brightness to the table. Dr. Sahar said she could easily eat it every day! To finish, the chocolate and fernet pot de crème delivered a rich, indulgent ending.

The Overall Vibe

Pretty Ugly provided service that was warm and attentive, even with the order-at-the-bar setup. The ambiance included dim lighting, modern design, and a cozy layout, which made it easy to relax and enjoy the experience. And one feature that stood out was the photo booth. “Such a fun touch,” Dr. Amanda said. “It made the night feel even more special.”
